Every year, there is a Day for Teachers on 5th of October to celebrate and show gratitude for them. By this day the students will express their feelings, how they are grateful about the teacher. The teachers are the ones who accompany students in every stage of their life even more than their parents. Therefore, they play a huge role in helping them develop in both knowledge as well as awareness. By this day, we can recognize the effort of the teaching fraternity to prepare the young generation as future leaders. Teachers’ Day is celebrated internationally, and has been on the official list since 1994, under the name of World Teachers’ Day. It is also a UNESCO celebrated day. World Teachers’ Day is observed on 5th of October in more than one hundred countries all over the globe. This coverage makes the day respond all over the world. It has become a huge celebration of the joint appreciation of teachers we have all over the world.
In Vietnam, the Teachers’ Day festival is celebrated on the twentieth of November every year. Celebrated annually on 20th November is known as “DAY OF VIETNAMESE TEACHERS” in Vietnamese and was first celebrated in 1982 . Before now, Vietnamese Teachers’ Day has already gone through 42 years of celebration and is counted as one of celebrated events within the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The Vietnamese Teachers’ Day was created on the World Teacher’s Day accepted by UNESCO in 1958. Originally, the World Teacher’s Day was intended to promote fellowship and peace among different countries. Later on it becomes appropriate for pupils and parents to express their gratitude with their teacher. Actually, this is a good time to have an opportunity to pay tribute to these teachers of the nation who contribute their best for the education of the country.
Although we have an international Teacher's Day, due to some custom and difference in culture, each country has its own specific date for Teachers’ Day. For Indians, Teachers’ day is organized on September 5th because this is the birthdate of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan an ex-president of India and also a scholar. On this day, the Indians give Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan an honor and the gratitude.
In the United States, they have Teacher's Week that is set on the first week of May and Teacher Appreciation Day is normally on Tuesday of that week. In Korea, Memorial day is also known as children’s day. They celebrate the day on May 15 based on their king Sejong’s birth day. The king also introduced the Korean language and Korean alphabet. Each country has different activities on this special day.
The celebration of World Teachers’ Day has more than a single importance. First and foremost, it is a chance to pay tribute to the teacher with their important responsibility in passing knowledge and forming characters and personalities to students. Teachers play their part in the development of society by promoting academic performance, and ethical pillar in the society. This day also draws attention to the issues that teachers encounter like poor supply, poor remuneration, little career advancement chance in some areas.
Of course, celebrating this day also means to draw attention of politicians and the society to these problems and call for educational reforms, as well as to work on improving the conditions for teachers in and outside the classrooms. However, beyond the emblematic connotation, World Teachers Day Year Of Education focuses on values such as respect, appreciation and continuous learning. It enables the student to think deeply about how teachers have transformed lives and at the same time help the public understand the joys and challenges of the teaching profession.
Taking gifts for teachers is one of the most common forms of celebration among students. These may be as basic as the cards and may extend to gifts which may include books, flowers or other items of choice made to order. To say thank you students and parents usually engage in small meaningful acts that underscore the close relationship between teachers and students.
In some areas, people fulfill this trip for teachers in a bid to celebrate the day. This might include students or parents organizing a special trip for the teachers where the teachers could accompany them on a one day trip from school. They are a welcomed way for teachers to feel refreshed and or valued besides offering them a break from the classroom trips.
Another way of celebration is offering a meal. Sometimes a school, parents or even local government makes some arrangements for a gathering where you can have a good meal with your fellow teachers. Breakfast is common for everyone to share, and this makes every one of them pull together strength. It also affords a chance for students and parents to thank them in person, thus reiterating what teachers are worth.
In Vietnam, Teachers’ Day celebrated on November 20th is given a very special observation. There are many special activities organized in Vietnam for this special day. Teachers are honored in various ceremonies arranged in schools and universities. The students with good achievement are appreciated as well. The students give their teacher gifts, flowers, and good wishes. Students in Vietnam usually perform dance, special art performances. These are normally staged and anticipated for many weeks in advance, and thus are marked with enthusiasm, pride and respect. Teachers have a chance to enjoy performances, give them feedback and feel gratitude from their students.
Flowers are an essential part of Vietnam's Teacher Day culture, so on this day, the teacher will be given colorful flowers from students. Vietnamese people have the notion that flowers are bright, beautiful and worth giving to the one who is worthy. The most popular flowers are roses and lilies. Students commonly apply various decorations in classrooms to give their teachers a warm and vibrant welcome. They also give teachers postcards with best wishes and perceptions.
On World Teacher Day, we celebrate teachers – but let us also ponder the importance of uplifting the profession as a whole. Teaching profession and teachers in particular are not simply employees in educational institutions who detail students, but mentors, models, and builders of a new generation. World Teachers’ Day seeks to remind society and collectively me of how important the position of a teacher is and how I need to do more to enable teachers to get the respect, resources, and consideration they deserve.
