Da Nang temple -  Linh Ung Pagoda 

Linh Ung Pagoda situated at Son Tra Peninsula, is one of the famous temples, which the visitor must go to in Da Nang. It must be said that this pagoda is one of the most important Buddhist temples of the city and this is famous for the huge statue of Quan Am – the Lady Buddha. The pagoda was built in the Nguyen dynasty but it has been refurbished and expanded severally. The statue of Quan Am has a height of 67-meter, becoming the tallest one  in Southeast Asia’s countries.

To Da Nang people, the statue was worshiped as the protector of the city to bring peace and help the city overcome disaster. The statue looks out over the East Sea with the left hand grasping a water container representing benevolence. The right hand of Quan Am is in the gesture indicating the granting of wishes. Linh Ung pagoda has a beautiful location on the Son Tra Peninsula with a view on the Marble Mountains and the vast territory of the city itself, that is why a great number of tourists usually visit this place.

There is another spiritual landmark in Da Nang that the visitor who loves spiritual places should visit is the Marble Mountains. In this place, there is a cluster of five marble and limestone hills that are named after the five elements in Eastern philosophy. There are a number of temples and pagodas with different Gods. People often visit Tam Thai Pagoda, this is an ancient temple that is three hundred years old. It was built in the Nguyen Dynasty so the architectural structure is unique and ancient.

When coming here, you can feel the peace due to the beautiful nature. Surrounded by oldest pine trees, the pagoda brings about the sound of wind blowing and the far-off hum of the sea could be heard. At Thuy Son mountain, there are quite a number of shrines within the caves leading. The Huyen Khong Cave is one of the temples that deserves special attention. It features natural light coming in from some openings. When standing in the cave, it looks as if you are in a magical kingdom, the sculpture and the altars inside the cave included. Specifically, the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War used this cave as a fighting arena and a hiding place as well as a hospital. Therefore, Huyen Khong Cave is not only religious, but also a historical site.

Phap Lam Pagoda is located at the city center of Da Nang city and is 90 years old. The Buddhists no need to go to remote pagoda such as Linh Ung or the Marble mountain temple to pray for happiness, they can access the pagoda easily. Phap Lam Pagoda is unique for its big yard with the view of the beautiful bonsai trees and flowers and Buddhas in different postures. The visitor can see the 1. 1-meter-tall statue of the Buddha at the central exhibition area.

Phap Lam Pagoda is not only a place of worship and religious practice but also an education center and cultural activities. Everyday, the pagoda often organizes meditation sessions, dhamma talks or festivals. Especially on special occasions such as the first day of the lunar month and full moon day, people throng to attend to. Some festivals like Vesak (Buddha’s Birthday) and Lunar New Year celebrations, the pagoda will be alive and decorated with colors, festoons, lanterns, and illumination. The Quan Cong Temple worships the hero general Quan Cong. He is considered as a saint who possessed very core human values such as loyalty, integrity and justice. The temple is located near the Han River and was built in 1910. The temple is featured with a special structure with an advanced roof, has many colors and dragons. At the center chamber is the principal shrine devoted to Quan Cong. His two sides are two servants statues with stern just images.

The attendants who go to the temple are Vietnamese and Chinese so this was an important cultural interchange point. Every year, the Quan Cong Festival is celebrated and attracts many people. The temple is used to perform special ceremonial dances, dragon dances and special cultural troupes to remind Vietnamese of their close links to China. 

The role of Da Nang temple and pagodas 

Nowadays, the society has developed and religious practices has changed but temples and pagodas still have a large influence on the spiritual life of the city. These areas are still vital to communities’ existence, carrying on native customs and transferring them from one generation to the other. Although modernization through urbanization and globalization is gradually setting in at a fast pace, these places are peaceful destinations for people.
